Visit Beekeeper 2016/05/28
Brixel is going to visit Jan Oris and his bees! More information should become available later on the mailinglist.
On 2016/05/28 Brixel visited Jan Oris who is a beekeeper.
Our visit started with a thorough explanation about bees and beehives.
The different types of bees and their complete lifecycle was discussed. We also learned that, depending on the time of year, the behaviour of the colony changes significantly.
Behives come in all sorts of incompatible formats and consist of several distinct parts. Some parts are for housing the bee colony, while others are used for harvesting honey.
After the explanaiting, we visited his actual beehive.
The hives where openend to take a look at the honeycombstructure and the bees. The difference between the female worker bees and male drones was clearly seen, as well as the difference in size for their hexagonal cell. Although we tried locating the queen, she could not be found. Jan Oris assured us she must be present. :-)
It was really curious to see not only how the bees built upon the given structures of the beehive, but built their own own structures in open places as well.
Brixel would like to thank Jan for his willingness to welcome us, for his torough explanation and to answer our many questions about bees. You can visit Jan's Facebookpage at https://www.facebook.com/MersenHoning-244637742561048/
